My Hero Academia – Season 3

My Hero Academia – Season 3

img_5466.jpgIzuku (Deku) has dreamt of being a hero all his life — a lofty goal for anyone, but especially challenging for a kid with no superpowers. That’s right, in a world where eighty percent of the population has some kind of super-powered “quirk,” Izuku was unlucky enough to be born completely normal. But that’s not enough to stop him from enrolling in one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies.

There’s no slowing down the students at UA, as right after the all-important sports festival they have an intern week. After all the pro heroes and hero organisations saw what they were capable of, some of the hero class have been made offers to become sidekicks of the more esteemed and well-known heroes and have been given fantastic opportunities. Not Deku, however. But thankfully All Might has set him up with an internship with a hero who was his homeroom tutor back in the day – Gran Torino. At first Deku despairs of the doddery old man in the run-down house. But Gran Torino is an excellent teacher, and might be just what Deku needs to master the difficult power of One for All.

img_5465.jpgMeanwhile, the Hero Killer is back in Hosu City and Iida is tracking him down, determined to get revenge for his older brother, whose earlier fight with the Hero Killer forced him into an early retirement from heroism. Shigaraki returns with more beings like Nomu and sends the city into turmoil. Whilst on their internships, Iida, Todoroki and Deku find themselves facing off against the man who calls himself this Hero Killer in their first villain fight since Shigaraki targeted All Might.

img_5469.jpgMy Hero Academia continues to move from strength to strength with its amazing cast of characters, fast-paced action and humorous style. After showcasing their skills in the academy, it’s time for them to put their money where their mouths are and work with established heroes in the real world. But with the Media circus surrounding Stain the Hero Killer, the league of villains has found itself with significantly more interest than usual, and Gran Torino warns All Might that he has to tell his new protege about the one who wields the counter power of One for All: All for One.

img_5467.jpgBut knowing about villains and their powers doesn’t halt the young hero’s progress. To test their strength and talent and measure how they have grown during their work experience, they are made to form teams of two and go up against UA teachers – tasked with either escaping an arena or incapacitating them. Of course, this means Deku is naturally made to pair up with Bakugo and face the greatest hero known to man: All Might himself. Deku has learned a great deal from the old Gran Torino and Bakugo is concerned that Deku has closed the distance between them since Bakugo has a rather uneventful internship with Best Jeanist. Will the two of them be able to set aside their differences long enough to work out a way to subdue the ultimate hero and show everyone just what they’re capable of?

img_5139.jpgThe animation continues to be excellent and the use of still frames just goes to show how epic the battle scenes continue to be. A good shounen anime relies on having dynamic, varied and skilful battles that aren’t predictable. They have to keep you guessing throughout all the trump cards, the reversals and the techniques and finishing moves – and My Hero Academia has a veritable arsenal to choose from considering its large cast with a very diverse range of superpowers.

img_5470.jpgI can’t wait to see more from My Hero Academia and follow Midoriya and his classmates in UA. Not only is it an academy full of aspiring heroes, but we have a wonderfully compelling and interesting protagonist that is flawed but with a good heart and given a great deal of power and responsibility that he must master and control not only for his own safety but to ensure the safety of the people in the city that All Might is protecting from the League of Villains. Deku has a legacy to live up to – but will he be able to do it before he and All Might run out of time?
