Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz

After a lot of magical battles and chaos at the end of the first part of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei, things have calmed down for Illya, Miyu and friends. The secret about Kuro has come to light and now everyone’s settling down to live a relatively normal life with their friends, family and school-chums now that all the cards have been collected. But is this really all that’s left for Illya? When is the next threat going to show itself?

We’ve waited almost a year for the second half of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei, and it has finally arrived (though a couple of weeks later than the rest of this season’s starters due to it only having 10 episodes). After Illya and team’s intense showdown with Bazett and having to consider the issues surrounding the eighth card, they appear to have a lot of time on their hands. Whilst Luvia and her ridiculous amount of cash set to finding a way to retrieving the last card, we see Illya become more of a normal high school student than ever before due to the lack of magical girl battles and doppelganger antagonists that she has to face.

Thing is, this means that not a lot is going on. This isn’t a slice-of-life anime, it’s meant to be magical girl action, fantasy lore and the dangers associated with that. Instead, we’re getting side stories with the supporting characters, summer birthday parties and beach episodes. Halfway through this anime and things have almost been completely devoid of plot. Sure, these episodes have their funny moments, but when you tune in expecting a something more from these episodes, no amount of situational comedy is going to stave off the disappointment.

I am hoping that things suddenly pick up – they certainly haven’t got much time to be playing with at this stage. There are rumours that there is going to be a bit more of a focus on Miyu, who has been rather overshadowed by Illya and also Kuro in the later episodes. There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding her and hopefully having some answers will explain her very sheltered existence and her reactions to Illya’s brother Shiro and the off-hand comments she makes about him looking similar to her own brother. After the revelations with Kuro at the end of last season, it would save the second part of this anime by having a couple of impressive twists come to light about our quietest magical girl.

If the team ever stop engaging in mildly-uncomfortable and unrelated shenanigans to get around to actually turning into magical girls and battling some enemies in order to collect the final card, that is.

It’s no secret that the lack of plot here is starting to trouble me. I’ve not read the manga pertaining to this anime, but I’m starting to wonder if the majority of the material had already been covered in the first season and now they are just trying to drag things out. It doesn’t even look like they’re trying to hide it. The conflict with the eighth card is coming soon, but is that the only thing that they’ve got to cover this series? If so, that would certainly explain why we’ve had nothing but inane silliness since the series began. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy more than my fair share of silliness, but when I’ve been following an anime for a few seasons, look forward to watching more of it only to find that the storyline seems to have dropped off the face of the earth, fun playtimes with Illya and chums just isn’t going to cut it.

There’s also been a little bit of hyper-sexualisation of what I imagine are ten and eleven year olds and some rather unnecessary in-your-face scenes that had me physically frowning at what I was watching. It just cheapens the whole experience for me (and creeps me out just a tad) and I did think of removing this one from my line-up after the first few episodes.

However, things have gotten ever so slightly darker in these last few episodes, which leads me to believe that the plot might be creeping back in with the re-introduction of Irisviel and the re-appearance of Caren. But the jury is well and truly out on this one, and only some impressive action scenes and shocking revelations can save it from falling flat on its face.
